Hello Maria, You can't get much greener than smothering them or boiling their roots --- depending on whether or not they are near your beloved garden or in the middle of your lawn, AND whether or not you can tolerate having a bald patch for a year or a small pile of newsprint and cardboard laying there for a year. If we are talking about something in the back area of your yard that may not be seen by neighbors (or if you don't care if they see it or not) you can get rid of weeds and poison ivy (like I did) by boiling a fewe large pots of water and carefully pour the boiling water directly against the base of the weed (don't get burned) and let it soak it. Do this until the ground actually steams from underneath. Do it again the next day, too. By the third day you will have dead weeds, and dead weed roots. The following year you will have to add some soil amendments to the sterilized area to begin regrowth of grass seed or flowers or whatever you want to grow. HOWEVER, if we are talking about weeds that are withing 5 feet of your garden plants, OR in with the plants, you can spot treat those areas by first saturating the plant with water, and lay about 5 or 6 sheets of dry newsprint over it that has been cut to size to cover it -- then thoroughly wet the paper. Afterward cut a piece of heavy cardboard slightly larger than the covered area and water it thoroughly too, then weight it down all around the edges and leave it there for a year (honestly .. until next year). This ensures that the plant AND roots will get NO air and NO sunlight and will be dead dead dead.
Maria these are as green as I can get when it comes to eradicating weeds. Good luck to you, and I hope this was of help. Thanks for asking HOMETALK for help :)
Millions of recipes! Everyone has some sort of recipe. Google or check out Pinterest as well as here on Hometalk. I just use boiling water or epsom salt and boiling water or vinegar, either standard white vinegar, cleaning vinegar or agricultural vinegar.
Dig them Up!
Here is a non-toxic weed killer, but be aware it will kill any plant. We use it for places such as in the gravel or cracks in the driveway. Weed Killer: 1 Gallon white vinegar, 2 cups epson salts, 1/4 cup Dawn dish soap, original blue works best. Put it on after the dew has evaporated and find the weeds dead by end of day. Works best on hot sunny days
Straight white vinegar has given me good results. I've used in sidewalk cracks and at the edge of my walks and patios with really good results
Boiling water works, and also vinegar. If it is a big area with no plants you can put black plastic down to kill them.
I mix 1 gallon of warm vinegar with 2 cups of table salt. Warming the vinegar helps the salt dissolve better. Mix well and add 2-3 drops of dishwashing liquid. Spray on weeds during the hot part of the day. Do not get this on other plants or grass as it will kill them as well.
There are several here on HM:

I just soak the area and pull the next day...I need the exercise! LOL
