Build a small cabinet over top of it and put a door in for easy access. Paint it to match you walls and you will barely notice it.
Paint the same color as the wall and hang some art or a picture over it.
Attach a picture that compliments your décor in a way as to not block the hinge, or put a hinge on the picture like people do with a safe and just open it to gain access.
Or attach wood trim to make a frame and either use blackboard paint that you can write on, hang a calendar, or use magnetic hooks to hang your jewelry.
I did this for mine. If you can find a basket or decorative box to fit, you can sometimes put up a photo with a deeper frame. You might also find some good ideas here.

I bought a pair of shutters and put them over the box making sure the hook and knobs lined up.
i agree with the shutter idea-if it fits with your decorating. Also like the hinged frame idea too!!
I put scrapbook paper over mine and taped it. that had dandelions and butterflies over it.
