How big are the trees? If 3 inches and it snows where you live, they won't make it. Dig up and place in pots and winter over indoors and plant next spring.
Water until it starts to go down to freezing temps.
Water until the ground freezes. If the ground does not freeze in your area, water through the winter though not as much as in the growing season.
so far I learned that it will take about 4.5years for roots to establish and I should give 3 to 4.5 gallons of water at the base every 2 to 3 days till established (4.5 y) water bags are sold for this. It is kind of obvious that one should not water at or below 32 Deg. F because ice does not penetrate the ground and the frost goes down to 2 to 3 ft promptly. Below 4 ft pretty much stays at low 50's F. But I need a botanist to tell me about the biology of trees, when or what makes them dormant and how do I tell happens.
