I have many books. I need a creative idea to maximize book storage.

One neat way is to put shelving over a doorway.

Are you willing to build or saw up a pallet? I made a few bookcases out of pallets. also checking on pinterest might peak your creative side. I find just looking at others ideas on DIY sites, netter home & garden, etc... always get me thinking outside the box.

Will closely watch the answers you receive. Have a similar problem with 4,500 hardcovers that I would like to organize and display. Have asked your question before but the only answers received were to use the dewey decimal system. I will always believe the books should be organized alphabetically by author so that I can easily find one that I would like to reread. Have heard of a plan to use I sheet of cabinet grade plywood to build a bookcase 2 feet wide and 8 feet tall but haven't ever located the exact plan to show the cutting pattern to use. With this plan each bookcase should cost $50-$75 for one case. Still much cheaper then IKEA or WalMart products. They can easily be adjusted in width to fill a certain wall area. Have to believe that the shelf above a window would work well for tying a whole wall unet of case together. Have even asked Husband if he could build in a window seat with storage below the window and tie every thing together. Would be so much easier to do if I could just find the original plan for the bookcases. Have even considered mounting artwork in front of the shelves since we don't visit each shelf on a daily basis. Hope you get some answers?

I took an old drawer length wise, painted it, attached wheels. Can put shelf liner in back. Added a handle on top. Is in my bedroom.

I do all ready have the books inventoried on computer so may do as you suggest. Husband has lots of his shop type books but some of them are oversized, some just regular sized, I have lots of cooking and craft books and again the size makes it difficult to organize on shelves. Maybe we can each have a bookcase for our special books, and still put all the fictional works on the rest of the shelves. I find that the Sauder cases sag and the backs are not firmly attached. Parted with those when we moved. Really want something that will be sturdy and can be fixed to the walls with L- brackets. May leave the backs open so that the walls can be painted with something with a bit of color. Before the move had all the oversized, coffee table type books on the very bottom shelf. Might just go with that again. Just at Home Depot and was looking at the sliding barn doors. Husband said he could do something similar with the appropriate hardware and cabinet grade plywood. Mounted in front of the walls of bookcases they could be planned to cover about half of them. They would slide back and forth so that only half of the cases were covered at any time and art work/pictures could be mounted on the front. I love the looks of the books but would enjoy the pictures also. Thanks for helping!

Many years ago when we moved into this house one of the first things we did was make bookshelves for our living room. the view first is of the shelves as they look after a major weeding out. We have books from our attic to our cellar, my bedroom, two other bedrooms, etc, d.r. sitting room These shelves are open backed and set into the sides. Some have angle irons fastening them to the walls. We have an ongoing battle trying to find space for both books and art! Bookshelves built to fit a specific space seems to be the answer in our case. But we also pick bookcases up here and there (I am looking at two such as I type) Never thought of making an inventory of my books on the computer! Ours are fairly well organized.
