Put some apple cider vinegar in a disposable cup. Add a couple drops of dish washing liquid to break up the surface adhesion and they will dive in and stay. Works every time. The shot I am sending has small pieces of apple. You don't have to do that but it sometimes helps. Make sure it's set close to where they are.

fruit fly trap. I actually ran across a some in a store....not hard to make your own. Small mayo jar..piece of rotting fruit plastic wrap or a paper cone with a tiny opening at the end. Rising dough, rotting fruit both give of co2 it's that which attracts them.
