I can no longer burn in barrels in my backyard. So I need a design for a firepit. It needs to be simple and inexpensive. I am 74 and in poor health, so it needs to be fairly easy for me to build. Any suggestions?

Can someone cut down the barrel into a ring? Place the barrel ring over a base of stone and sand (if you want to get fancy) and you've got a firepit.

We "donated" our barrels to a welder who cut it down for us in trade. We painted it with engine paint just to make it look fancier on the outside and put it down at a good spot for us in the backyard. We dug down, put in some stone and then several inches of sand. We put out a couple of wooden benches and voila! instant compliance.

Menards and some of the home centers sell a similar ring for $30-60 that you have to put together, but our steel drum will probably last as long and didn't cost much except for a can of spray paint.

Thank you for the pininterest site! Very helpful and tons of designs. All of them fairly inexpensive and easy enough for me to do!

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. Looks like I will be busy this weekend.

My girlfriend uses an old washing machine drum, has lots of pin holes in it for air, yet deep enough to burn firewood. I've sure seen enough of those drums up at the dump.
