I use a pumice stone to scrub stains from a toilet. It works every time.
Do you have well water? You may need an iron, manganese filter. What I do once a week. Pour in some vinegar in the toilet. A few squirts of Dawn dish liquid but any will do. Swish around with a toilet to foam it up. let it sit for about one to two hours. Then swish around with the toilet brush again and flush. The suds suspend the vinegar above the water line.
Turn off the water and drain the bowl. Use a wet pumice stone. Barbara is right, it really works. Then use marine paste wax and wax the entire bowl. Buff dry. Fill bowl. Do not use those things dropped into the tank. Reapplications of the wax are necessary, but only after several, several cleanings.
Never thought of pumice, but I have those stains and a fairly new toilet, too. I finally used Bar Keepers Friend cleanser and it worked. I sprinkled it in. let it sit for a while, then used the normal toilet brush and Voila! a clean toilet.
