When I made an extended visit to our farm in Texas to help care for my aging father, my little ShihTzu made the trip with me. She would come in covered with the spurs so I immediately started pulling them up. I hand weeded about a half acre and then raked as much of the old accumulated dead plants and seeds as I could get up and burned them. In spring I knocked the new plants out with 'Spectracide', a broad leaf herbicide. I didn't know about the corn gluten trick, only that they were a negative force to be reckoned with. Good luck.
