I'm not a fan of laying a new floor on top of the old. Especially vinyl because any pattern or unevenness will eventually telegraph through the new floor. I removed one of those messes in my house a few months ago.
Best advice is to buy 10%-20% more than you think you need and follow the manufacturers instructions. They have engineered this stuff to be an easy install and it is as long as you do it the way they tell you. There are no difficult steps Sparky.
I'm going to buy the vinyl planking thats approx 1/4" thick so it should lay flat & smooth over The thin linoleum

Be careful with your floor selection... vinyl is often a final Surface finish on laminated wood. Think... wood + water = ???
Thicker floor makes toilet connection problems... at teh drain. There are solutions, but if you're not prepared in advance, could you a day or two to finish...
