Sounds like you are reading hard covers. I can't say I have that problem although sometimes reading in bed the book will fall out of my hands as I have fallen asleep! A large book that is heavy could be a problem. Have you tried placing a pillow in your lap? Or maybe restraining the pages already read (with a big rubber band holding them in place? Just took one of my books down, a biography (I mostly read non-fiction) the book is hard cove and 9.5" X 6.5" and with the indexes is 400 pp. I am 83 and I don't remember any problem holding that.
There is a product made for this. It is stuffed like a stuffed animal, and covered in velvety fabric. It is shaped like a triangle. I have seen in in catalogs with items for the elderly and disabled. Sorry, don't have nay around right now to give you the name of the catalog or the name of the product. IT lets you prop the book up, either on a table, or on your lap - if you are reading in bed. Long ago I had a metal stand, that had bars across it, so you could prop a book on a table and read it.
amazon.com has an inexpensive holder for books, Ipads, etc. that has a little ledge on it and you can place a book, magazine, etc on there and adjust the height and read all you want!
They do make some products for this, here are links for some:

I learned to use a fat stuffed almost circular pillow when I was holding my grandchildren as babies. I think it is called a Boppy, although there may be other brands. Take the baby out and prop you book up, even using the Boppy under your arms or behind your back. Many come with a washable cover, and you can buy replaceable covers. Best wishes šš
They sell pillow lap desks to hold books, tablets, etc.
