Redoing a porcelain bathtub involves sanding the old finish and reglazing. This can be done professionally or you can do it yourself with something like Rustoleum's tub and tile glazing kit.
My recommendation is to have reglazed by professionals. Not as expensive as one might think. Will last for many years and be easy to clean.
