The moss is telling you that grass does not want to grow there. It is too shady, and/or damp. I have a huge ancient oak tree in my front yard and tried to kill the moss with a commercial moss spray. It came back the next year so I now have a moss lawn. It's great - I don't have to mow it! I've planted shade plants in a garden under the tree and have a unique look.

unfortunately, its a cause/effect scenario at play. Too much moisture and shade equals perfect enviroment for moss to flourish. I had the same problem horribly too! I refuse to use chemicals or repeatedly bang my head against the wall, soooo. I scraped the top layer of soil, just deep enough to get all the moss. Then I put down a triple thick layer of landscape fabric. Then I got a load of gravel and I'm done! No more head banging or mowing!
ossi have transplanted the moss to places that you may want it, like between spacers
or damp areas where grass wont grow, like under trees etc. i love moss.. looks great and feels great and u dont have to mow it!
