You are going to get weeds! Pull them by hand. Turning soil actually results in more weeds because you are turning up dormant weed seeds to the surface. I wouldn't have let him use Round Up either
yes, that is the proper way to landscape. You can use newspaper and cardboardd along with the heavy landscape fabric
He's not very professional. You need to put a solid barrier around the bed to stop the encroachment of weeds. Here in Florida we have contractors that install monolithic concrete edging around flower beds. That handles the problem.
i put down black fabric weed blocker from lowes. cut out areas for the plants. works well. also consider paving bricks, etc. to separate bed from lawn.
Round up works well but will kill anything it comes into contact with and isn't good for pets either. It is a pain in the butt but push the mulch out of the way, pull the weeks then lay down newspapers if you have them (about three layers) and put your mulch back in place. Any weed barrier will work but if you get the newspaper or know someone that does why pay for weed barrier when the newspaper is free. I like it because I can punch a hole in it easily to plant another plant if I want to, is biodegradable and AGAIN it is free!
Wrong wrong wrong. Did you check his qualifications??? Sorry, it just irks mr to no end when hired "professionals" do things incorrectly. It is their job to know! The soil needs to be tilled and amended, then good quality landscape fabric placed and secured, then arrange plants and cut appropriate size holes for them, then mulch of some sort. So sorry you wasted your money and now you know to ask what method they use. You will still get weeds, but they will be on top of the landscape fabric, shallow rooted and easy to pluck out as they appear.
Boycott. Them. That's what I do..
Roundup only lasts a short time and does not kill the seeds or prevent germination of seeds that were brought up, it only kills what it touches. Pull what has started before they get too large of a root. If it is something that grows from roots, pull all of it beyond the garden so that you can keep them from coming into the bed so far next time, you can catch them as they enter when the are easy to pull. You can put down weed barrier now, or wait until next year when plants are small and easier to deal with putting it down. Right now after you pull the weeds, I would put down Preen Weed Preventer. It stops the weed seeds from germinating and it really works. I put it down in the spring and have to deal with only the root born weeds till later in the summer and some times not at all. The only way to deal with the root born weeds and grasses is to pull them, as they don't grow from seed. Preen is not harsh chemicals and causes no problems with even planting seeds. I put it down in the spring when I plant my bush and pole beans and corn seeds and it does nothing to them. I hope this helps, I have been doing this for years before I start mulching with shredded leaves and grass in my veggie garden and only spend a few minutes pulling creeping charley every week. You can get a handle on it in a short time. If you don't want to go with weed barrier (I don't) just make sure you mulch your garden with your choice of mulch ( but not rocks without a heavy barrier), and enjoy your new garden. You can do this!
thank you all for your words of wisdom! I have used Preen and I do weed my flower beds... I took these photos to send to the landscaper. I have learned a huge lesson..
We use preen after we have weed the gardens and laid fresh mulch. Sprinkle Preen serveral times during the seasons especially after heavy rainfalls.
weed barrier should always be used.
