Too hot in Texas to grill!

My patio faces west and I cannot grill. I checked the price of motorized shades, way to expensive. Any suggestions?

    How about a pop-up tent? A pergola?

A few ideas: Maybe a sturdy rod with curtains, weighted at the bottom? You could use tie-backs when you want the sun. Or ordinary bamboo-type roman shades? Or a trellis, with a vining plant on it? (If you don't have a place to plant, there are planter boxes that you could put a trellis in. I have grown clematis quite successfully that way, with $10 metal trellises from Lowe's.)
  • What about shades? Roll down bamboo style? Tension rod with curtains? I hear you, when it is that hot, I wait till the sun goes down to grill and eat. What do you have to work with to give you better suggestions. Do you have a patio cover? How about an off set adjustable umbrella?

    Shade sails

A shade sail, would help with the sun... and few 4x4 posts with a header would support bamboo shades that could go up or down as needed.... run a soaker hose on top of the shades and let the water trickle down to help cool things off.

How about a pergola with curtains of sheets or drop cloths. Even roll up bamboo shades.
