My question as I watched these grandparents was always, "Why are you sweeping your yards, and why is there no grass around your house?" We have grass around ours.
If you are talking about the green mold type fungus that appears annually, just fill a spray bottle with Clorox and have at it. Even better than Clorox is pool chlorine if you have some and just use about 20% chlorine to 80% water. Wait about a half hour and then hose it down.
Spray heavily with vinegar, let it soak in, then brush off or hose off.
Use wet and forget,safe around plants and no work involved

I use a spray bottle with a 50-50 ratio of water and bleach. Then brush and hose it down
Costco's Spray and forget
Sprat them with the hose on high. I had the same problem and blasting it with the hose works great. Power washing is too harsh on the blocks.
