We use a blind I got from Lowe's, made of wood. Not sure of the wood type, but it has worked for over 5 years.
You have the same situation we do. We have a drop cloth that we clip to a rod on top, then, with rope, tie the bottom at both corners to the banister.
I would say a bamboo shade. All you should have to do is put something like hooks in the patio to hook it on when it is down all the way.
there are shade cloth blinds out on the markets now. big box diy store "L--wS carried them or get a hold of a green house supply company, ask how much for x amount of shade cloth and make your own blind.
