Best and easiest, hire out the work. Doing it yourself; not so hard, but lots of prep and cleanup. Hope this helps.

Hi there, if the popcorn ceiling has not been painted it will be a lot easier to remove it. Spray it down with water and scrape it off. Yes, it makes a mess etc. But it is very doable. You could always cover it with just about anything you like, they make new styrofoam ceiling tiles that all you have to do is glue them up, you could also cover them with wood etc.
please be careful when scrapping the Ceiling. Some of the older popcorn ceilings may contain asbestos.

I saw on one of the home shows that the owner used a pump sprayer like the exterminators use. Mist The ceiling and the plaster can be scraped off easily.
When we did ours, we taped thin plastic drop cloths to the top edge of the wall next to the ceiling, then we put more on the floor. When it was time to clean up we just wrapped it all together. It made it easy to clean up the mess.
Call in the Professionals, it's a dirty and possibly dangerous thing to do.
