You could use concrete screws to attach the mantle to your brick, I've used them to hang things on my brick fron porch.
If this is really a solid wood beam, it will be too heavy to be supported simply by bricks. Better to do the drilling than have the support fail and tear off the front of the fireplace.
I would attach corbels, either wood or metal with concrete anchors into the bricks then attach the mantel to the corbels.

I agree with Nancy. If it's truly heavy use the anchors to the beams. That's what I did and have never had a problem.
Hubby is correct, drill into studs, I would also add corbels as Brent suggested, will give it a more finished appearance.
We put up our mantle a few years ago, our fireplace is covered with river stones. On my husband's first attempt, one of the sides did not catch well and the mantle dropped on that side. Although some things on top broke, we were lucky there was no dmate to the fireplace of the mantle as it hung suspended from one side. On the second go around he used anchors that he drilled into the stones, making sure they caught in the back. It's been perfect since.
