I have never had any luck starting sunflowers in a pot and the transferring them to the ground. I always put seeds straight in the ground. If you feel you need to start inside, you can do it in a biogradable container.
You can divide if you want to but not necessary. Just let them grow. The blooms will last a few weeks then wither and die. You can deadhead as necessary (and harvest the seeds), and they may generate new blooms, but sometimes they are once and done. When you harvest the seeds you can eat them or plant again.

I feed the outside birds and black oil sunflower seeds and they are their favorite. Just by the laws of nature, and because birds are messy, I have them come up all the time and I just let them do their thing and then pull and discard the stalks when they die.
If you plant in pots every 2 weeks or so, you can continually have sunflowers throughout the winter. Next summer plant some in ground if you have space, they will get huge!

The biggest thing with growing sunflowers to have sunflower seeds is the pest that comes along with the plant make sure I read up on those . I did not know about some of them and ended up having to throw all my sunflower plants away
If they are giants, they will probably need more room. Do you have a place to transplant them? In that process, they can be further divided and given more room.
Thank you to everyone who have replied to my question. Much appreciated. Regards Marlene.
