I really don't like painted steps and my husband caulked the porch where there were cracks and I don't like the looks of it at all. Any suggestions?

I think that you would be much better off consulting this one with the professionals, given that this type of things must meet code for security reasons. I reckon if you just dive into it without checking for law requirements you might end up with a bit of a problem in the long run.
Definitely could result in a liability issue unless you go for the full blown industrial motif!
I was just wondering the same thing. When I was a kid, my father made a lift wall to the basement. I would like a removable railing to move appliances/furniture in and out, but haven't been able to find a safe solution...
Although I am not promoting any of this, due to safety concerns, here is some info on the subject. I do remember seeing a video a few years ago, with the frame left intact and the railing slid on it like a baby gate. I'm not sure if it is still out there.
