If you want it solid, prime it first using Kilz, paying attention to the mortar lines and then painting the brick. After it dries, use the color of your choice on top. If you want a whitewash look - use chalk paint, paint the mortar lines first and then dry brush or dab each brick with a stiff brush. Here's one of mine that I did. It is so easy and goes on fast!
Seal it first otherwise what ever you do will sink in.
I would prime first then paint...may need several coats
