Unicorn spit will jazz them up, check out unicorn spit gel stain on youtube
I use whatever paint I have on hand. Clean them up first and roughen the surface slightly (I use a sponge sander) so that the paint sticks. Or you could start with a base coat of a spray paint meant for plastic (I'd still clean them up first). Here's another idea: modpodge and any kind of paper or fabric that has a design you like. Clear sealer or more modpodge over it and you're good to go.
I would use a glass etching product and etch them with a modern pattern, like bold stripes.
I am wanting to do something with mine. thanks for all the beautiful ideas!
