There must be some insects or they wouldn't be pecking, you might want an exterminator to take a look, could be termites or carpenter ants.

woodpecker males use the tapping as a mating call - the loud sounds bring in females! it is against the law to shoot them but you can run them off if you hear them - I go outside with a broom and it stops them but sends them to my neighbors
We got rid of our woodpecker by putting an artificial owl at the spot they seemed to like. It's the same owl I usually hang over my garden to keep birds away from my veggie plants. Worked well for both purposes.

Are they woodpeckers or flickers? Flickers usually will peck on anything that is loudest during mating season to attract his mate. (If u really want a loud wake up: let them find the metal chimney cap to your fireplace!)
