Plant sticker bushes beneath your windows this spring. In the meantime cut wooden dowels (1 inch or more in dia) and jam them between the top of the lower sash and the top of the window. Make them a snug fit. Two inches up from the bottom drill a small hole thru, then feed a leather lace thru the hole and tie it off in a loop. When you want to open the window pull the dowel out using tbe loop.
Use 2 X 2, cut to lengh for patio door and all windows.
Both Cynthia an V Smith have fantastic suggestions! Here are a couple more links with a few more things you might consider. I have my house lit up like a christmas tree year round. I installed motion lights on all sides of my home. I also use timers for lights inside the house and move them around periodically. When I leave the house, I leave a TV on too.

We've installed a little device called Windobully on our windows that has done a pretty good job so far (we're using it for about 6 months). It's a kind of window lock that prevents any sliding window from opening but it allows ventilation ( here you can find a YouTube video).
We don't like bars so we also use window security film (3M, I think) to secure the glass. There are many ways you can improve window security, besides the above-mentioned ones, I've also found this article pretty useful, it will give you quite a few ideas (although I have only tried a few of those tips).
