Maybe a whitewash solution? It might be just enough to lighten it.

I have a sand stone fireplace. I cleaned the stone and painted a stone sealer on first. Painted it white. Next l took Lt. Brown paint and with rags l smoothed the paint over the stones. Quickly rubbed paint into cracks with white showing through. It is light and the character of the stone was emphasized. I have had this for over 10 years and still looks good. Worth the effort. Goes with all decor.
I think it is beautiful as is.
Have you considered perhaps budgeting for a carpenter to cover the existing Flinstone-like fireplace with a more modern, contemporary box.?That way you would be starting new with a new-looking fireplace, with a surface that is meant to be painted. You could choose exactly what color you wanted, to best blend in and complement the rest of the new decor of the room.
