What's the best way to prepare wood paneling before painting?
It's a large room with three walls of nice varnished wood which we want to keep and paint light where we can still see the wood details.
Painted paneling looks like painted paneling, in our case being a log cabin very much brightens up the place. Using a paint primer combo product makes a world of difference with application and coverage
We filled the gaps in the paneling, then primed and painted.
Make sure the paneling is clean and dry. Prime with a good stain blocking primer like Zinsser 123 or BIN. Then paint like painting regular wall. If the paneling has grooves you can fill them with drywall patching compound. Let it dry overnight. Next day use a damp sponge to smooth the patch. Then prime and paint.
If it is cheap paneling before it is painted, it will, only improve with paint. If it is the old 50's style pine paneling boards you may need to seal the knots with a specific primer before you paint. Either way some shade of white will look good. Keep it neutral if you want it to visually disappear. Use your color in other parts of the room.
Painted my 1950's basement wood paneling (not knotty pine) simply by washing it down with soap and water and letting it dry, priming it, and painting it white. No need to fill in the grooves. Just use a tiny paintbrush and dab the paint into the grooves. Took a few coats of paint but turned out beautifully.
Clean, prime and choose paint of your color. Does take time and patience but will look great when you finish.
Use Liquid Sandpaper to tack up the surface, then prime and paint. this will make your primer grab better.I did this in our church nursery. It is remarkable the change it makes.
Prime it and use a good brand of paint.
