I don't know that this is the best way but it works for us. My husband built it but before this we had just the end pieces supporting two long pieces with cross pieces. This one is five sided. With lattice from Home Depot, but wood lattice. This is many years old and has served us well. I will ask my husband to sketch out how it looks "empty" and post this. He also built the one below that is for wisteria. The structure shows better here. And it is simpler
We built one out of 3 old wooden ladders for only 4 grape vines. (one up each side and one across the top) They really climbed it and looked great. If we needed to add more later we planned to do the same again.
We just used pound in "T" posts and clothesline wire.... kind of like you see in vineyards... and it works quite well....
Lenora, your suggestion is pure genius!! Simple and 'doable' without a lot of carpentry involved. I'm assuming it would be a good idea to use wood sealer on the ladders before installing so they won't rot, correct? I think your idea would also look fantastic as a patio screen and use "S hooks" on the horizontal ladder rungs to hang baskets of fern or annuals.
