Well.... you don't want the nail long enough to come thru the other side.... Nails are recommended as they have a higher "shear" strength than screws

Hey there, I would definitely recommend screws. The length of the screws really depends on what you're putting them into. if you're making a deck for instance and you're hanging 2x12s from those joist hangers you're going to want at LEAST 4" screws
Also... a Palm Nailer can help get into the restricted space
