Downstairs bathroom needs Serious help!

Ok so I know it needs help. I don't have a lot of money to invest right now but suggestions on how to improve in the meantime? I replaced ceiling tile only to have upstairs drip again. Wallpaper is peeling and two types used by previous owners. Carpet is removable. What do you think?

  • My vote is to remove the wallpaper. Take everything out of the room, wash everything, including walls, prime and paint. Even white will do. Then get an inexpensive fabric shower curtain. That will hold you over and provide you with a fresh, blank slate to create what you want. Then when you have time and a bit of money, tackle one thing at a time. Work from the top down, fix the ceiling, then the flooring then any storage units or cabinets. Lastly, some new towels any new decor pieces you wish. Can be done over time as funds become available.

Fix the leak from above or you will have a mold problem. Remove all the wallpaper...not a good idea in bathrooms, in my opinion. Warm water in a spray bottle and a scraper will work. I've done it recently. After you spray the surface of the paper, score it with the corner of the scraper so it will absorb under the paper. Paint with semi-gloss paint after it dries. Definitely remove the carpet!!! That's another mold trap and very unsanitary for a bathroom. Not sure if it's concrete under the carpet or what. If it is concrete, you could just paint for now (floor paint), and I would tile when funds are available...ceramic tile isn't terribly expensive. If cold floors, use bath rugs in lieu of carpeting that you can throw in the wash.

Fix the leak first before anything. Rip off the wall paper and scrub the walls. Paint the walls a nice pastel color of choice. Hang some dollar tree wire baskets on the wall to declutter the vanity. Is there storage under the vanity? Get some bins from the dollar tree and make use of the vanity bottom. Get the end table out of the bathroom and put up a five shelf unit to straighten out that corner. Just trying to help.

Remove carpet. Don‘t remove wallpaper - just reglue the tear neatly. Take out shelf - get inexpensive white tall storage unit for all the “stuff”. I would then get wainscoting and put it half way up the wall- you wouldn’t need much but might be over your budget. Or just put a horizontal piece of molding half way up and change the bottom covering in some way, either paint or different wallpaper or even stick um tiles. We used faux marble stickums in our bath and totally covered pink And green ceramic tiles and it looks great, just used a heavy duty adhesive cauk to stick them well. Good luck.

Find and fix the source of the leak. Strip the wallpaper - depending on how old it is you may need to rent a steamer. Wash and repair the wall then paint. I would add a mildew preventative to the paint. Get rid of the carpet and either paint the floor or replace with tile when affordable. good luck.

I agree with everyone who have given you answers before me. First is to de clutter. Take out everything that doesn’t need to belong in your bathroom. I have a drop ceiling in my basement bathroom and had a leak as well. As long as there is no mold on those ceiling tiles they can be painted easily. I have just used regular paint or spray paint in white whatever I’ve had on hand. Not sure what your budget is but so many things can be updated just by painting even your fixtures, the rubbed oil bronze color is what I just recently painted all my faucets, shower heads and light fixtures. Just clean really well maybe a light sanding and tape everything off really good and use a good spray paint like Rust-Oleum. Mine turned out beautifully. I put a sealer on my faucets but not on my light fixtures. And remember if you have a nice piece of furniture you can make a vanity out of a repurposed piece of furniture. My vanity is out of a diaper changing table. I’m not sure what kind of mirror you have but framing a builders mirror or just adding an old one youve painted as I did. Does wonders for your update. And don’t try to paint over your wallpaper. It turns out peeling years later. Take the time to remove it properly. i learned the hard way. good Luck! Hometalk is wonderful for great how tos and ideas!

  • Redo on a dime.... def find where leak is first & repair (prob something super simple but yes mold will spread like wildfire... Than Remove everything ..... kilz your drop ceiling tiles and paint White.... Remove wall paper it’ll never stick if you don’t have a lot of ventilation ( been there done that).. I’d buy a paint in satin maybe a Grey you can even add sand texture if walls aren’t in best shape... paint mirror trim in white, Remove Remove Remove Carpet....... You can even paint the floor or look for a cheap Lenolium they have gorgouse wood vinyl which u might find a good size reminante . So easy to put in... cut & glue.. You can use curtains as shower curtain. Paint shelf white. Roll towels put on it , put t-paper in the basket , go thru your department store of toiletries (I’m jealous) put what u don’t use in baskets put what you use most in basket that’ll fit under sink, dollar tree sells nice cheap area rugs in gray for 10$ . I’d make small baskets like tooth brush basket, lotion basket, hair basket etc .. you can get like 4 for 1$ at 1.00 stores. Repaint corner shelf & side table white add some simple Letters on shelf staggered down $1 a piece at hobby shop paint gray that say Relax . Cpl gray hand towels bam done & looks like a Gem.... Looks as if everyone else already stated the obvious such as removing paper and carpet, painting etc. Only thing I'll add is if you feel you need all those toiletries to remain the room, think about one of those over the door shoe storage things. It will hold a lot.
