Vinyl floorcloths: is thick craft vinyl (not flooring remnant) ok?

For those of you who have done floor cloths: I always see tutorials featuring vinyl flooring remnants. I guess for most people that's the cheapest material available (and surely the most durable). But I can get some thick (1/8"?) craft vinyl in large sheets at a recycle craft store down the street--live in downtown Portland, OR, and I don't have a car, so getting remnants would be a real headache. They have a big lot of them, most over 6' long. I'm not even sure they're craft vinyl (I've never used a Cricuit or anything) but they're not patterned like flooring would be, and the volunteers at the shop don't know, either. I'm uploading a pic of one roll: you can see it's white on one side (matte, kind of rough), and a shiny color on the other.

Since they're going to be coated with polyurethane and everything, would this be inadvisable for any reason? I know they've traditionally been made with canvas, so I suppose there's no problem... is there anything I should watch out for in terms of materials? I.e., I'm sure matte's better than gloss for paint application (although that can be worked around with the right primer and some sanding).

If anyone has some insights on what this could be, would love to hear from you. Thanks much!

    This looks like upholstery vinyl.

thanks for identifying it; do you think it would be suitable for a floor cloth?

It may be too soft, and mar with heels, or dog nails. If its a low traffic area it would probably be fine.

And if you already have it, then it's definitely worth a try! Let us know!

I have some of this stuff in black and I agree it's too soft for flooring. I used some as a cushion cover for a dog bed and it stretched just from the weight of a lab laying on it.

I used it once to cover some plywood to make sides for a super single waterbed that my kids used when they were little so they wouldn't fall out. It was durable, but snagged and ripped fairly easily because it is so pliable.

Ok, thanks all. I thought it might be suitable since they're traditionally made with canvas, but it sounds like the difference in the type of material makes it unsuitable.

Appreciate it! Off to Home Depot :(
