We did our popcorn ceilings ourselves and it was dusty. Then some friends did theirs and duct taped a dry/wet vacuum hose to the scraper to do theirs. Problem solved. You might want to consider this?
Patching always shows. It must be removed to be redone. Ask at a piant store - the painter can use a special machine which removes and vacumes the mess at the same time so you don't find it all over the house.
