For me.....2 pieces of wood rugged wood rough edges. Why cause of da bridge. one piece wood on top and other on bottom. little chains on top on sides to hang it. bottom wood will pull it straight and keep it firm. wood be bit longer than width more presentable.
depending on the painting itself, you may want to hang it 'frameless' -- you can get a small bottle of 'craft latex' paint in a corresponding color to the primary color in the print and just paint the edges of the canvas; Also, molding works well and is already beveled for a smooth edge; you' could blunt cut the corners, or miter them if you have the tools; and use finishing nails to attach to the stretchers -- or wood glue works; Be sure to 'finish' the raw wood how ever you want it ... paint it black, stain a wood tone ( walnut, etc.), again depending on the print.
The style now is to hang canvases without frames. I have 2 of them that way. They are photographs on canvas that the colors wrap around the edges and are stapled to the back. You can carefully paint the edges of the canvas a color you like and hang it.

get rid of the frame , and think of it like a wall mural — use trim /molding that you like that matches or adds interest to your decor and have it framed out . I hired a professional because I can’t do it myself - I painted the trim a color - see what you like and looks good .
I agree with those who recommend removing the frame and painting out the edges. However, I would add that the picture seems much too high. A general rule for hanging such a large picture would be to put the center of the picture at eye level +6"
Hello,
You could stick a frame onto the old one, or use wallpaper border or Gaffer tape to cover it. You could also buy Picture Moulding or Unpainted timber moulding too. Enjoy!
