All depends what kind of expense you want with a budget? You can use anything from bark nuggets ( don’t use bark dust, it promotes weed growth too fast) many different roacks or gravel, or get into using granite slabs, etc! There’s actually recycled tire products made into squares of different sizes and is easily cut to different sizes as well
Whatever style you decide to go with, in order for your new walkway to have durability, to not shift, crack, or sink, make sure you do the proper preparation first.
You will need to level the land, then put down landscape fabric, to prevent weeds growing up in-between your stepping area. Then overtop of the fabric, put crush. This crush will encourage proper drainage, and will help to support the weight of the stepping stones and the shifting weight of persons moving back and forth across the walkway.

Take the {repurposed} Path Less Traveled

Between the columns and curving around to our back porch steps is a brick path laid by my husband. This works very well. Since the bricks were "found" it was cost effective. Since we have a brick patio this looks of a piece. The walkway curves around from bottom right corner of second pic.
You're welcome. I've learned the hard way through experience that it isn't always cheaper, less work, or easier, in the long run, to try to cut corners in the beginning.
