Try using a spray bottle and shooting him when he does it.
Another alternative is double sided tape in the area he is scratching. Cats do not like the tape on their paws.
Worked with our kitties.
Do you have a scratching post and cardboard scratchers for them? This is a natural instinct and they need a place to do it. If they have none, they will use your furniture.

I have even seen cheapie ones at dollar stores. I have several around the house along with a scratching post.
Place scratching posts by them
My daughter keeps a spray bottle of water to spritz them. Most of the time now, she just has to pick up the bottle and they know she means business.
My cat will not use a scratching post in the house. I say STORM NO, with force in my voice. This usually works after a couple of times. He does understand. If he does this again, he wants something important to him.
Put ‘Soft Paws’ on his nails. They are like acrylic nails and have rounded edges.
😊
I used double sided tape on areas the cat liked to scratch (eg the sofa, an upholstered armchair, a carpeted step). The tape alone quickly broke him of the impulse, and I was able to take the tape down. Later I bought him a carpeted cat stand and also discovered his love for catnip. He would scratch his stand and now even the little cardboard scratchers when they are liberally sprinkled with catnip (but only the good stuff).
