Have a friend that used a slab of wood cut down to fit above the fireplace. They made sure that the wooden mantle was high enough so it wasn't a fire hazard. They stained it to keep the natural look. Nice job.
A 4x4 cut to length and secured with lag bolts is a quick and simple solution.
Select the width and length that you want, finish it to your desired taste and then attach with the proper screws, whether it is stone, rock or drywall. Use "L" Brackets underneath to hold the shelf.
