Feeder roots will grow out to the ends of the branches. I would not plant a maple in a pot. It could stunt the growth. Plant it where you want it, or find a faster growing tree. Use an umbrella in the meantime.
Two things: make sure the pot is big enough, and never never forget to tend to your watering schedule. That does not mean drown it so it gets root rot but if you allow it to get so dry that the leaves wilt, your tree is done.
