Floating shelves with a lip, or groove, can work well for a surface to 'hang' and display plates. It can accommodate places of various sizes, and enables you to switch out your display without having to remove and reinstall individual hardware pieces.
Buy or make a shelf and brackets. Make a Grove in shelf one inch from edge to take plate. Or run a piece of beading along shelf to retain plates.
