I am unclear as to what to do with this part of my house, "The Breakfast Nook".

Have you tried the potato trick?
Some times the bulb gets a little rusted and will stick in the socket, I've also had to bend the bulb metal loose from the side with the needle nose pliers. This may have to be the first starting point in one area to get a good grip. Good luck. Bill
Take a small piece of potato and plug it into the hole. Turn it in the direction of the threads and the fragments of the bulb should come right out.
