white wash or paint it to blend with your room
I honestly love the color of it! I whitewashed my brick, but the rocks had some awful colors that didn't blend in with the floors, wood, etc. Maybe you can update the look of it by changing out the picture above the mantel, etc?
Whitewash it.
What kind of style do you prefer? Mid-century modern? Traditional? Do you want to emphasize the fireplace more and the brick less, or vice-versa? Have you considered moving the TV to a different wall and relocating your furniture to make the fireplace the focal point of the wall not in competition with the TV right next to it? Personally, I would keep most of the brick just the way it is, I think it is a nice neutral color. For a mid-century look, if you have the skills to D-I-Y (I do not so I would hire the job out) I would cement board and concrete over the fireplace proper including the hearth all the way to the ceiling line and leave the rest of the wall brick. For a traditional look, I would panel out the fireplace in white (a wainscotting look), add a black marble hearth and paint the mantel black, leaving the rest of the brick wall as it is. First, I would either move the tv to directly over mantle as the focal point or away completely from the fireplace since it is competing for attention.
Then, I would remove any other items from the fireplace mantle except for one or two large items that would balance out the tv. (the picture you have there now is awesome and is a good choice), but the other little knick knacks are too small for the scale of the brick wall and are getting lost.
I think everything else works--- the color scheme is good but you need to establish what is the "focus" of the wall (tv wall?) and then focus on scale. It is a big wall. You need big items to balance it.
Replace the mantle with something bigger and whitewash the brick. Maybe add some white built ins on either side and leave brick as is. Connect built ins to mantle. Put tv on wall to left of this wall. This wall fireplace one, would be an awesome focal point!
Just thinking out loud 😀.
I agree with everyone that says don't Chang the brick, move TV, larger mental, built ins, any or all of these will make that wall awesome.
If I were you I would check out Pinterest there are so many ideas on it and just look and find one that you like
You didn't mention budget, but.
I suggest TALL built in look Ikea bookcases on either side. Check Pintrest for ideas. You could design a space for the TV/media and add doors to hide it when needed. Make the lower cases deeper than the upper, then top them with a distinctive counter top type material. You must attach Ikea to wall. By adding base and crown trim, as well as perimeter half-round, it completes the built-in look. The base and crown also add height. DONT FORGET LED LIGHTING♡
They have various lines and sizes and heights. I recommend the Billy line, with solid or glass doors on bottom, and glass doors on top.
By the time you are through, it will look like a different house
The brick is beautiful. I think maybe paint the beam on the ceiling brown. Build a much larger mantel painted the same as the beam. I would hang the TV somewhat above the mantle and decorate the mantle with larger items. 😀
Just some thoughts. Good luck and God bless your efforts!
Move the TV away to another wall. You need a MUCH larger mantel or a complete surround for the fireplace. This would help to break up the brick. Perhaps some bookcases built in around . see the pictures below. I would not paint it. It would decrease the resale value of the home.
Dylooney...when I get stuck I always look for similar rooms on-line or in magazines and books and cut out/collect ad many photos as possible. Then I would rank them and keep deleting the "losers" until you only have a couple of design choices left and used that as the basis of your "dream" wall. There are no right or wrong ways to decorate...it is simply "is it functional?" and "do I love it?"
You can paint over it. There is a paint at Lowes that has Lime in it and is recommended for brick. You use two coats, the first coat does not look so good, but after the second on it is georgeous
Have it White-Washed... That would look Really Pretty
I just painted mine and another lg wall about 20 years ago , have had not one problem. It was of the color on the outside of my house .painted it white
Put in light hued flooring.
As I see it from your original photo, part of the problem with that entire wall is that it goes up to a point apparently to the roof line...that in itself detracts from many possiblities for that wall...whitewashing it or leaving it will not change the fact that the point at the ceiling is still and will be there ....it will cost money but if you are open to the idea of wallboarding off that point into a lateral straight across line just above the fireplace you could do very nice designer bookshelves on either side of the fireplace and yes you do need a larger very nicely designed mantle to carry the focal point of the room....I see some great photos from other commenters with super ideas of bookshelves with the brick exposed on either side....I would definitely not place your TV over the fireplace as that just detracts from the room as well...many people do this but from a design standpoint it is unsightly and just plain ugly in my opinion....maybe you have room for a nice TV console or some such cabinet on a wall other than that corner where it ruins the view of your fireplace focal point wall...it may take rearranging some furniture for optimum viewing...up to you....best of luck!
I think the brick is beautiful but it is an awfullynlarge wall of it. I’ve seen sandblasted brick that really updates it as well as painted. It’s all about preference. It is certainly a more traditional look here. The main thing I noticed right away is the ceiling fan! It would be the first thing I would update with a extended pole drop with a flush globe. it would be Really pretty with that high ceiling.
I agree the mantel needs larger taller objects on it.
Definitely agree the tv is VERY distracting and throws off the symmetry. Perhaps hang it above the fireplace or to the side. I notice your floor space is very open and could use a big area rug. Something to pull in color from throw pillows etc? mostly, have fun with it!
Can't wait to see it finished
please don’t whitewash it it looks beautiful the way it is
I would mount tv above fire place and add pictures on each. Side
