I would use the paint on fireplace cleaner that you peel of and the soot goes with it.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jFlqynHYcU
I have light bricks around my fireplace. I used Clorox Clean Up spray and cleaned the bricks using a small brush and a tooth brush. I cleaned them one at a time, very carefully, so that the bleach would not drip. It worked well and made a huge difference in the appearance of the fireplace. Good luck!
Try a stiff scrub brush and soap and water, first. If that doesn’t work, you can use hydrochloric acid but BE CAREFUL! ☺️
i made a thick paste of baking soda and water and scrubbed with a stiff scrub brush. It's very time consuming but rewarding. You may need to repeat a few times depending on how long the soot stains have been there. Leave the scrubbed paste on overnight and brush off the next day with a clean scrub brush, vacuum or sweep up debris.
Thanks!
This is weird but it worked: spray on foaming bathtub cleaner! I like scrubbing bubbles.
