Follow the above directions but put the toothpicks in at an angle so they hold the avocado in the water a bit lower, maybe at a 45° angle.
Don't let it dry out.

I have attempted 5 avocado starts since October 2016 and have 3 plants. It takes up to maybe 6-8 weeks to see a root start. Once the plant starts growing and is about 6" tall, clip it down below the lowest leaves. It's devastating to do, but it really does help with making the plant bushier. Good luck.
