Well, it's a difficult job to cover a popcorn ceiling with anything, that won't make it look uneven. You should have it removed. Easiest diy way is to make sure you saturate the ceiling with a sprayer filled with water. Once the popcorn has become soggy and gross, get the largest putty knife you can find and start scraping. By wetting it, you get less dust and it comes off cleaner and easier. Just don't forget to cover any furniture or flooring under it. Doesn't have to be perfect, but the bead board will look and go up straighter and easier. Good luck.

Once you know there’s no asbestos then before you make a soggy mess, get up there with a paint scraper and see if that gets it off. I was ready to do the wet spray and big mess but I thought i’d See how hard to dry scrape and it went like a hot knife through butter!! i was working in empty room so I just covered floor with plastic and just rolled it all up and tossed it. You have to wear goggles, dust mask because you’ll be covered with dust.
