You could use two different colors of chalk paint and distress them. Or also do a stencil design on top. Here are some links with ideas too:

See Paul--again the chaik paint. For about twenty bucks you could do cabinets and the table! LOL
Another finish some like is a stone look for top. You can buy that and choice of color at Home Depot or Lowes for about 5 dollars and then finish with a clear coat or urethane. If you end up doing cabinets as well you should have some left. Also if you had some old wallpaper laying around or anything you wanted to collage together, you could paste that on and then even then cover with glass for ease of using and cleaning . Great conversation piece!
