I'm sure the liquid was vinegar....probably mixed half and half with water. Vinegar is a natural disinfectant and will keep the oranges from molding in the liquid.
And great for countertops, oven fronts, and floors. After straining, there is still just enough orange oil to leave a shine, but not an oily feel. ☺️
I have made and used this. Place the orange peels in a quart jar and cover them with vinegar. Put a lid on it and allow to set in the refrig several weeks, its ok to give it a swirl. After waiting pour off the liquid into a sprayer bottle-be sure to label it. Spray where you want to clean, the vinegar has an orange aroma, but it does fade over time and the vinegar smell remains.
I used to have lemon peelings 'soaking' in a minimum of water. Not any more. As a cleaner for the kitchen, what I do is: 1 part cleaning vinegar, 1 part water, and a few drops of essential lemon oil or lemongrass oil. Saves having bowls and bowls of lemon rind soaking in water. If u want, u can put a couple of drops of dish washing liquid in the mixture. Just be careful with the mixture - i.e. the oil ingredient - don't use on the stove, or near any heating appliance. Oil is combustible. I also use cleaning vinegar - 4 parts CV to 1 part dishwashing liquid to keep the shower (glass) screen. Once a week I use a little bit of bi-carb to wipe all over the shower stall, ensuring that the bottom of the glass and tiles also get a scrub. To get rid of scum build-up. I also put a cup of bi.-carb. down the drains (buy in bulk from the swimming pool shop), and then tip a good quantity of cleaning vinegar down the drain. It will froth and bubble. And if u r super keen, follow the bi.-carb. and vinegar with boiling water.
