Add lots of Sand Grit and Humus................
Mine too, mine is clay through and through and the only way to get it to grow is to add top soil. I am having to add top soil to my garden this year, actually thinking of digging up some of the clay, really do not want to do this. I spent way too much money last year only for the plants and flowers not to grow. I had to get the yard top dressed last year as well and probably needs it again this year. I had 2 landscape companies come out and this was their solution.
I have this problem as well. I add sand and top soil. Mix really well. Make sure you break up the clumps.
You can also dig in grass clipping and other compost materials!
I have a friend who is a very good gardener. When they downsized from their house to a condo, the soil in the new place was very clay y. The dug it out to the depth of 6 inches then amended it heavily. Although she does not have the vegetables she did in the old yard she have very nice flowers.
