More than anything tomatoes need 8 hours of sun each day, putting them near a tree might not give them that sun.

for other considerations use large containers with drainage holes and place in a location of 6-8 hours of sun a day
Seeds now.a seed co. Said not to plant near any walnut trees.
I planted some near two walnut trees once and they did well.
Tomatoes like acid soil, but it may make it too acidic and not enough sun.
Tomatoes need lots of light and moisture so do not plant them where there is a lot of shade. If you plant them near a big tree they will not do well.
Unfortunately, black walnut trees do not play nicely with others. Tomatoes will not do well around them. And they produce an extensive root system with also produce toxins for other plants.
Plant your tomatoes in large pots... then sink them into the soil where you "wanted" to plant them... if they suffer, move them.
