We had a bearing avocado tree in Modesto, CA. Weather: hot summers (90-100), mild winters (mostly above freezing). It was in a sheltered spot between garage and house. Small avocados, but edible.

They grow wild in Mexico. I have seen people grow them from seeds and they fared well but had to be protected from freezing.

It is difficult to get the seed to grow if the avocado was bought in the super market. All of their product have been nuked and it is hard for the seeds to germinate. See if you can find some that did not come from the store. Then you should be successful! Good luck and San Antonio would be a great place!
