My opinion that will make it stand out more
Hi Shelley. I think a wood look to match your furniture and the chair rail would look nice.
Try narrow picture shelves all the way down to lean art as a feature, lean small against a larger one offset to show more art work. Even interesting old empty frames add character.
MIrror Tlles will add light and expand the depth of your focal points. OR....Colored Tiles will add splashes of color,or stick to 2-3 colors for a more subtle look.
I added pics to give you an idea to possibly off of of.

I see brick in my mind.
I like the brick idea!
I like the wood look or mirror tiles. A toss up.
I see in the picture that you have a bench blocking the opening in the wall, so that it is not being used as a passage way. I would suggest that you fill in the bottom portion of the space, making it indeed a narrow ½ wall and then build in shelves or shallow cupboards for storage. On top of the new ½ wall put a topping that is slightly wider, so that it can be used to lean on, or as a landing surface to put mugs, a small lamp, etc.
This idea would give functionality and definition to the presently empty space.
Adding millwork trim to the flat post would make it more attractive, update the look, and integrate it with the new wall storage unit.
you can remove all the surrounding material (there is some) and purchase a column that comes in two pieces. its a gorgeous look. i have it in my house.
i would just install shelves in the opening. Make them open shelves by just adding wood shelving evenly up the opening
I love both flipturn‘s & Joy’s suggestions. Your never going to disguise it so make it a feature using trim, molding etc. I would put bookcases or cabinets (stock items) in the opening & add nice wood top or a pallet top or a granite top depending on your budget & style.
