No, that is a matter of personal taste.
No, you can use chalk paint. The distressing part is a separate process that you would do after painting the cabinets. Read carefully the different types of chalk paint & choose the one that is not for distressing! Hope this helps!
No! You can even make it look glossy with a light sanding between coats, then several coats of sealer. But it’s usual look is a soft, flat paint look because it lends itself naturally to rustic, country, casual, antique decor. ☺️
No, sometimes a chalky finish is perfect just the way it is.
No!
Of course not, that is just a trend or preference.
I personally don't like to distress furniture or cabinets. I do use chalk paint for furniture, and you can achieve a nice finish and then seal it. Here's a piece of furniture I did with chalk paint: https://www.hometalk.com/diy/home-office/furniture/new-life-for-a-family-desk-34804253?r=1

Not if you don't want it to. Chalk paint is wonderful and it dries so fast. I recently painted a small wooden chest and the used a wax finish for the details to stain out. It was carved wood.
No, not at all - if you do not sand it off - it will just be paint.
