No, you can use chalk paint. The distressing part is a separate process that you would do after painting the cabinets. Read carefully the different types of chalk paint & choose the one that is not for distressing! Hope this helps!
No! You can even make it look glossy with a light sanding between coats, then several coats of sealer. But it’s usual look is a soft, flat paint look because it lends itself naturally to rustic, country, casual, antique decor. ☺️

Not if you don't want it to. Chalk paint is wonderful and it dries so fast. I recently painted a small wooden chest and the used a wax finish for the details to stain out. It was carved wood.
